Smooth moulding with fine wire wool or plastic abrasive pad. Colour wood with a water or spirit stain. Seal the surface with sanding sealer or clear sanding sealer. Smooth again and then apply the wax, rubbing along the grain, with a pad of 0000 wire wool.

You can apply wax on an unsealed wood surface, but the finish may sink with time.
